DIPLOMA CLASSIFICATION

STUDENTS WHO ENROLLED BETWEEN THE AUTUMN SEMESTER OF ACADEMIC YEAR (AY) 2018/2019 AND THE SPRING SEMESTER OF AY 2020/2021

On the Bachelor’s programmes, the classification of the diploma is based on the average of the following four grades rounded to two decimals:

  • the average of the grades earned in compulsory and compulsory elective subjects as specified in the standard curriculum weighted by the number of credits
  • the two grades of the final exam
  • the grade of the thesis.

STUDENTS WHO ENROLLED IN OR AFTER THE AUTUMN SEMESTER OF AY 2021/2022

On the Bachelor’s programmes, the classification of the diploma is based on the average of the following four grades rounded to two decimals:

  • the weighted average of subjects completed on the programme rounded to two decimals
  • if the standard curriculum of the programme includes comprehensive exams: the average of the grades of the comprehensive exams rounded to two decimals
  • the average of the two grades of the final examination rounded to two decimals
  • the grade of the thesis.

THE PRE-DEGREE (FINAL) CERTIFICATE (ABSZOLUTÓRIUM, IN HUNGARIAN)

The pre-degree certificate serves to certify that the student has completed all the academic (course) and examination requirements specified in the Standard Curriculum of his/her programme (with the exception of the thesis and the final examination) and has earned all the credits required for the completion of his/her studies. Only students who have already obtained or expect to obtain their pre-degree certificate by the start of the final examination, may register for the final exam in the given semester.

DOUBLE-CHECKING YOUR ELIGIBILITY FOR THE PRE-DEGREE (FINAL) CERTIFICATE (ABSZOLUTÓRIUM, IN HUNGARIAN)

By default, the Student Affairs and Registrar’s Office (Registry, for short) carries out no prior examination of the students’ eligibility for their pre-degree (final) certificate. Therefore, students are advised to examine if they meet the pre-degree certificate requirements independently, by taking the following steps:

1. Determine your Standard Curriculum

You can check if you are eligible for the pre-degree certificate based on your Standard Curriculum. Two factors determine which Standard Curriculum applies to you.

  • Your programme (International Business Economics OR Finance and Accounting)
  • The year when your legal relationship with the university (your student status) was established (in most cases this is the year and the semester when you started your programme). To determine this, go to Neptun > Studies > Training data > Start of legal relationship.  For example, if you see the date 01.09.2022 there, this means that the standard curriculum called „2022 ősz” (where “ősz” stands for “autumn”) is yours. The Standard Curricula are accessible here. (Do NOT use the Standard Curricula that are available in Neptun as they may contain erroneous information. Only use those on GTK’s Sharepoint for students.) Go to Sharepoint GTK Students > Standard Curricula. First click on the name of your programme in English, then on the year/semester. After the Standard Curriculum opens, check the year/semester at the bottom of the table again to avoid any confusion.

2. Examine your subject completion

After opening your Standard Curriculum, you can double-check if you have completed all the required subjects against your completed subjects list in Neptun. Go to Neptun > Studies > Gradebook.  From the "Terms" drop-down list choose “Every term” and then click on the 'List' button. Completed subjects are marked by a green tick in the column called “Completed” at the end of the subject row. (Subjects not completed are marked by a red X.) It is of utmost importance that you always confirm the subject codes as different subjects may carry the same subject name but have a different subject code, and only those with the appropriate subject code can be considered (i.e. the subject codes in the Standard Curriculum and in Neptun should be the same).

3. Check the foreign language requirements

Students on the English-language programmes: Due to the fact that the language of tuition on the English degree programmes (International Business Economics BA and Finance and Accounting BA) is English, the language proficiency criteria (detailed below) are not relevant for the students of these two programmes. The only criterion that applies these students is that they have to complete their entire programme in English.

Background information: At the end of 2022, the Hungarian Parliament passed a regulation with regard to the requirements concerning foreign language proficiency, according to which a language examination is not considered as a condition for obtaining a degree. Instead, language teaching and the teaching and assessment of foreign language proficiency is determined as the task of higher education institutions in the framework of proficiency in “specialised” foreign language(s). proficiency teaching and testing. (This kind of language proficiency and the relevant exam is called “szakmai nyelvvizsga” in Hungarian and is sometimes translated into English as “professional” in some documents.)
Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) provided the following information on the institutional-level implementation of the Act in spring 2023:
– Current students of the University are recommended, but not required, to take a foreign language examination in order to obtain a degree (diploma).
– For students starting their studies in the academic year 2022/2023 and beyond, ELTE specifies the necessary requirements regarding foreign language skills essential for employment purposes in positions based on the students’ qualifications in the curricula of the different programmes. The university completed the curricular changes by 30 June 2023.
– Students who will obtain their pre-degree (final) certificate in the autumn semester of the academic year 2023/2024 will be exempted from the foreign language requirement.
For students, who obtain their pre-degree (final) certificate in or after the spring semester of the academic year 2023/2024, the following criteria for obtaining this document apply. (Based on the 35/2023. (V.31.) decision of the Faculty Council concerning the modification of the foreign language requirements on the bachelor’s and master’s programmes offered by the Faculty of Economics.)
Criteria that apply to the students of the Hungarian language programmes (bachelor’ and master’s) are detailed on the Faculty’s Hungarian website.

If you meet all requirements listed above, you are eligible for the pre-degree (final) certificate.

Further information on the pre-degree certificate, the thesis submission, and the final examination is available on the Moodle page dedicated to international students.
