Credit transfer and recognition
Credit transfer and recognition
CREDIT TRANSFER AND CREDIT RECOGNITION
A procedure in which the student’s credits, previously earned during his/her legal student status, are assessed and recognised against the requirements of his/her current standard curriculum.
THE CREDIT TRANSFER PROCEDURE
According to the regulations regarding higher educational studies, students need not complete the requirements specified in their standard curriculum if they have completed them previously and are able to prove this credibly (with officially certified, signed, and stamped, documents). A request for the recognition of knowledge acquired during previous studies can be submitted to the Faculty’s Credit Transfer Committee. Based on the rules concerning credit equivalence laid down in the institutional regulations, the Committee decides if the study units previously completed are equivalent to the currently prescribed requirements.
COMPOSITION OF ELTE GTK’S CREDIT TRANSFER COMMITTEE
- Chair: Vice-Dean for Educational Affairs
- Members: 1 member per department, 2 students appointed by the Student Union (HÖK)
- Secretary: administrator appointed by the Head of the Student Affairs and Registrar’s Office
TYPES OF CREDIT TRANSFER
Currently at the Faculty of Economics, four types of credit recognition and transfer may be requested officially by bachelor students. The Faculty Credit Transfer Committee examines the submitted requests and compares the knowledge on which credits are based, as follows.
I. RECOGNITION OF PREVIOUSLY EARNED CREDITS FOR COMPULSORY AND COMPULSORY ELECTIVE SUBJECTS OF THE STANDARD CURRICULUM
According to Section 49 (5) of Act CCIV of 2011 on National Higher Education (2011. évi CCIV. törvény a nemzeti felsőoktatásról, or Nftv for short, in Hungarian), “credit may only be given once for successfully completing any given body of knowledge. Based on the prescribed exit requirements of a given subject (module), credits may exclusively be acknowledged by the comparison of the knowledge serving as a basis of the credit. …The committee set up for this purpose by the institution of higher education (hereinafter credit transfer committee) shall compare the knowledge concerned.”
For compulsory and compulsory elective courses in the standard curriculum of any programmes offered by the Faculty of Economics (ELTE GTK), credits are recognised through the comparison of the course contents of credits, completed on previous programmes in first or second cycle studies (bachelor’ and master’s programmes).
The request to submit is “Credit Transfer Request - Compulsory and Compulsory Elective subjects”. Go to ELTE Neptun HWEB, choose appropriate language, go to Studies > Curriculum, choose your programme’s standard curriculum and the subject in question. At the end of the subject row, click on the + sign (Options) and choose “Submit request”.
Compulsory attachments: diploma supplement or registry sheet extract or Transcript of Records with Course Syllabi or Transcript of Records from the Electronic Registration System (in case of older study programmes: a copy of the relevant page(s) of the course records - early paper-based version of the Transcript of Records), course content or subject description. All submitted documents must be institutionally certified (stamped and signed).
II. RECOGNITION OF PREVIOUSLY EARNED CREDITS FOR FREE ELECTIVE (OPTIONAL) SUBJECTS / CREDITS OF THE STANDARD CURRICULUM
According to Resolution XIII/2022 (IV.8.) of ELTE’s Academic Board (Oktatási és Képzési Tanács, or OKT, for short, in Hungarian) earlier obtained credits (completed subjects) can be recognised as free elective (optional) credits as follows,
1. Credits from successfully completed previous programmes, irrespective of the level of the programme, can be recognised as free elective (optional) credits in the standard curriculum if they were earned by the student during his/her studies on top of (beyond) the credits required to complete the programme/to earn his/her degree. This means that if the required number of credits to earn a degree on the previous programme was 180 and the student earned 182 credits, then 2 credits can be recognised as free elective (optional) credits in the current curriculum. If the student earned only the prescribed number of credits on the previous programme, then the number of credits completed on the programme, including also free elective (optional) credits should be understood as the requirement for, and therefore, as part of earning the award. Therefore, they cannot be recognised.
The request to submit is called “Credit Transfer Request - free elective (optional) subjects”. Go to ELTE Neptun HWEB, choose appropriate language and go to Administration > Requests.
Compulsory attachments: institutionally certified diploma supplement or institutionally certified registry sheet extract (in case of older study programmes: a copy of the relevant page(s) of the course records - early paper-based version of the Transcript of Records). For credits earned before the introduction of the credit-system, a certificate stating if the student completed any subjects beyond those in the standard curriculum is required.
2. From a previous, not completed programme, irrespective of the level of the programme, any completed credits can be recognised as free elective/optional credits of the standard curriculum.
The request to submit is “Credit Transfer Request - free elective (optional) subjects”. Go to ELTE Neptun HWEB, choose appropriate language and go to Administration > Requests.
Compulsory attachments: institutionally certified Transcript of Records with Course Syllabi or institutionally certified Transcript of Records from the Electronic Registration System, (in case of older study programmes: a copy of the relevant page(s) of the course records - early paper-based version of the Transcript of Records)
III. RECOGNITION OF CREDITS COMPLETED IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE ERASMUS+ STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMME FOR COMPULSORY AND COMPULSORY ELECTIVE SUBJECTS IN THE STANDARD CURRICULUM
Students can request the recognition of credits completed during their current programme in the framework of the Erasmus+ study programme for compulsory and compulsory elective subjects by submitting the following request and its compulsory attachments. The recognition is based on the comparison of the course contents.

TIMEFRAME FOR SUBMITTING THE CREDIT TRANSFER REQUEST (THE DEADLINE IS FINAL AND NOT NEGOTIABLE, NO REQUESTS SUBSTANTIATING LATE SUBMISSION CAN BE SUBMITTED)
1 September 2023 (20:00) - 15 September 2023 (16:00)
The deadline is time-barred (final and not negotiable). No request can be submitted before or after that period and no requests substantiating late submission are accepted.
HOW TO SUBMIT THE REQUEST AND THE RELATED DOCUMENTS?
The credit transfer requests can only be submitted via the Neptun system.
If the request is incomplete (including the lack of supporting certificates and documents), the committee cannot reach a decision and will reject the request without examining it in detail.
The overall credit value of credits recognised in the credit transfer process cannot be higher than 50% of the total number of credits required for obtaining a degree (diploma) defined in the standard curriculum of a given study programme (including doctoral programmes). In case of identical disciplinary requirements, the Dean may approve the transfer on the condition that the Student must complete at least one third of the total credits required for obtaining a degree (diploma) on the given programme.
In the case of students re-admitted to the same programme (hereinafter: re-admitted students), the study units previously completed at the university on the same programme will be recognised by way of credit transfer. Re-admitted students are not required to complete one-third of the credit value of the programme on the given programme.
Students transferring to ELTE GTK may initiate a credit transfer procedure by no later than the third day of the teaching period to have their previously obtained credits recognised. This deadline is final and not negotiable. Should the student miss this deadline, no request substantiating late submission is accepted but he/she can submit a regular credit transfer request in any later semester.
