Application details

Prospective students of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Visit the links on this page to learn more about the programmes and the application requirements. Candidates are kindly reminded that as some of the application details between the self-financed and the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programmes vary slightly, studying the appropriate applicant category below is of primary importance.

One criterion we must call your attention to in advance is the applicant’s age. This is due to the highly bureaucratic character of the Hungarian public administration system, which requires the presence of a relative/legal guardian of an underage person to be present and to sign for the minor in all official situations, the Faculty of Economics only accepts students who are over the age of 18 at the time of enrolment (the beginning of September), which is the legal age in Hungary. Exceptions to this rule can only be made in the following cases:

  • if the application is submitted to the self-financed programmes
  • if both the prospective student and a close relative/legal guardian already reside in Hungary and have a Hungarian residence permit, or
  • if the guardian has a valid visa proving that he/she can stay here with the student until the student turns 18 to allow the adult to take care of all administrative issues for the minor throughout this period.

A declaration stating the (future) presence of an adult/legal guardian in Hungary, as well as proof of a residence permit and/or visa must be submitted together with the application documents.

The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship programme requires candidates to attain the age of 18 by the start of their studies.

Applications are accepted through the ELTE Dream Apply system that you can access below. The application process normally starts in January and closes in early May to allow successful applicants to obtain their visa and insurance, and to deal with all other administrative matters before starting their studies. For more information, visit the “Before your arrival” section under Current Students on our website.

STIPENDIUM HUNGARICUM SCHOLARSHIP HOLDERS

Students with excellent academic records can apply for the Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) scholarship. For those who are awarded the scholarship, the tuition fee is covered by the programme. They also receive monthly scholarship to help with their living costs.

Prospective scholarship holders have to apply to their chosen programme NOT directly at the Faculty of Economics or ELTE but via the SH application platform called the Stipendium Hungaricum Dream Apply platform, usually between mid-November and mid-January. For the eligibility and application criteria, visit the Stipendium Hungaricum website. The application timeline and a number of useful documents on the website will make the application process smoother.  Finally, if you would like to learn about the regulations of the scholarship provider (Tempus Public Foundation, TPF) in advance, follow the link to Frequently Asked Questions – Already a scholarship holder.
