Opening ceremony of new GTK building
ELTE GTK’s new Building P on Rákóczi út offers 2,500 square metres of student space. The opening ceremony took place on 5 December. Balázs Hankó, state secretary for higher education and ELTE dignitaries honoured the event with their presence.

ELTE’s Faculty of Economics is becoming increasingly popular every year, with the number of students studying at the Faculty reaching 6,600 this academic year. In response to the growing interest, the Faculty has carried out a major development project and refurbished a building on Rákóczi út, just a few minutes’ away from the Faculty’s main building. The new Building P, renovated for HUF 1.2 billion, offers 700 new seats in four lecture halls on three floors and more than 2,500 square metres of space.

Designed by József Hild, the nearly 200-year-old building now has a new staircase, courtyard, lifts, common areas for the students, as well as modern technical installations and a new electrical system. The largest lecture hall seats approximately 120 students, and it can also be converted into an exam hall with computer stations. All the lecture rooms have brand new furniture and state-of-the-art teaching equipment, and this allows all lectures to be recorded for the benefit of the students.

In his speech, Balázs Hankó, state secretary for innovation and higher education, emphasised that for years, ELTE had been among best higher educational institutions in international rankings as far as academic excellence, talent management, and internationalisation were concerned. He also stated that it was our mission to equip young people with competitive skills because the improvement of the Hungarian higher educational system would lead to the strengthening of our economy and society.

ELTE’s chancellor, Gyula Scheuer stated that GTK’s new building was exceptional among the several other buildings, campuses, schools, and dorms he had opened in the past months by being the result of an innovative project that was entirely funded by the Faculty of Economics.

László Borhy, ELTE’s rector expressed his pleasure concerning the growth in popularity that the Faculty had witnessed since its foundation in 2021. He also underlined that the new building was the true embodiment of the spirit of modernisation and innovation, on which the university relies while also preserving its traditions.

The Rector symbolically handed over the building to the students represented by Anna Dorottya Nagy, President of the GTK Student Union. According to her, to be a successful student, you needed three things, namely personal motivation, excellent teachers, and favourable working conditions. With the new building, GTK’s student now have everything it takes to succeed in their studies.

The ceremony ended with Professor György Andor’s presentation on the various stages of the project. He thanked the contractors for their work and finally showed the audience round the brand-new building.
