"The lights of South Buda" - from the perspective of students
Thanks to the great effort in promoting the hiking trips from ELTE GTK, we were able to find out about the walk on the 12th called "The lights of South Buda", organized by ELTE GTK Hiking Club. The idea of going on a hike was extremely appealing to us, so we jumped at the chance.
The trip was definitely a valuable opportunity for us to participate in more extracurricular activities of Hungarian students. As international students, the odds of us encountering the language barrier were high, however, this wasn't the case at the hike since we were enthusiastically supported by a member of the GTK Students' Union. Her assistance was an important factor for us to experience the trip to the fullest extent.
Another perk of “The lights of South Buda” was a chance to boost one's mental and physical health. Through approximately 10km and 3 hours of walking, our muscles were strengthened, and our batteries were recharged after a hard-working week, allowing us for an even more productive week ahead.
We were able to appreciate the beauty of Budapest for the entire evening, until the sky went dark. Various different kinds of trees appeared one by one, most with huge canopies and branches reaching high and far to catch the sunlight. We trod along paths, immersed in fresh air, sunshine and the sweet aroma of flowers, leaves, and the woods. Not only did we enjoy the beauty of Budapest through our eyes, we also got to hear the interesting stories about the pits scattered along the paths. But one of the most memorable moments in the trip was the spectacular view of Budapest at dusk, from up high and afar–our reward after 2 hours of hiking. Yet the beauty didn't just end there, because in the later part of the trip, once the city faded into darkness, each of us was provided with a head light to venture further ahead. After another hour of walking, the sight of the dark sky with twinkling stars unfolded before us, truly confirming the allure of the nightlife of Budapest.
It was such an amazing experience that we will never forget in our student life. Moreover, "The light of South Buda" was a good way to connect, make new friends, and expand our social circle. If opportunity arises, we will always be ready to participate in other activities from ELTE and ELTE GTK.
