Social recharge beyond studies

As they do every semester the groups recruited new members in February. This was an opportunity to meet the active members in person, ask questions and see how these organizations work. Each club is run independently by the students and is supported by the Students' Union (HÖK), which provide a venue or equipment when needed.
"When we came up with the idea of Student Organizations in the 2022/23 academic year, our aim was entirely to promote some sort of professional organisation while increasing student wellbeing" explained Bence Csidei, Vice President of Finance at HÖK and the lead organizer of recruitment. The process starts with a call for applications, which we publish on our social media pages at the beginning of each semester. This is followed by an interview where students explain their proposed activities and plans for the coming year. After the interviews, which will take about 1-2 weeks, I present my proposals at the next meeting and the HÖK Board votes on which organizations we want to support. Csidei also mentioned that this time, a record number of groups have been formed to attract new participants to their communities, although there is usually more interest from students in September when the new academic year begins.
In 2025, three new English-speaking student groups were also launched, providing more opportunities for international students to integrate. One of these is HiC (History and Cuisine), where group members can learn about different periods of historical significance and related culinary customs, led by one of our Russian students. On each occasion, they can also taste traditional dishes prepared by the group leader, that are relevant to the theme. Based on the samples offered during the recruitment event, new members certainly won’t be disappointed. Of course, other participants will also be able to share their country's traditions and prepare a tasty dish to add to the variety. The plan is for the group to meet every 2-3 weeks. Another great option for both foreign and Hungarian students is the Tabletop Guild Circle, a social role-playing game based on the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Fans of creative fun can unleash their imagination and create a new adventure every time. 1-2 times a month, even for an entire afternoon or evening, it's an exciting and fun activity that requires no previous experience, as experienced members can easily engage newcomers. Lastly, the FINNECT team also meets in English to brainstorm and share experiences about post-graduation opportunities. They gather useful advice on accounting and finance, as well as other business topics. Meetings will also feature experts from well-known and successful companies to give a better insight into the alternatives and jobs offered by their companies. This way, members can leave the university with clear goals and a strong sense of direction for their professional future.
Among the Hungarian-speaking circles, there are also some new ones, such as the Zöld Klub (Green Club) where roundtable discussions, debates, film screenings and guest lectures deal with important issues for today's society and economy, such as sustainability, environmental protection, ecological footprint or the role and responsibility of people in reducing pollution. In addition to developing conscious thinking, the newcomers will also be able to shape the group's activities together. Another well-represented group at the recruitment event was Társasterápia (Board Game Therapy), whose purpose is to bring together board game and social gaming enthusiasts for fun and relaxation. The group has a nearly 50 members, and half of them regularly attends the biweekly gatherings at the Q building.
"I come here to unwind whenever I need a break from the university routine and assignments. We always create a cheerful atmosphere, playing old favorites while also trying out new games. Someone always brings an unexpected, never-before-seen board game to the table. I even have a growing list of games I want to buy as gifts or add to my own collection,"shared one enthusiastic student while playing cards at the event.
For craft enthusiasts, the Kreatív Alkotók Társasága (Creative Makers' Society) offers the perfect space for relaxation and artistic expression. Each session introduces a new creative technique, like embroidery, painting, tie-dyeing, crochet, or even glitter tattooing. The group has been running for two years with around 40 members and an average of 10 participants per session, typically held on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 PM. If you're looking to bring creativity into your daily life, refine your manual skills, or just seek inspiration, this is the place for you. The QLTR Film Club is designed for those who enjoy not just watching movies, but discussing and analyzing them with others. Members can also look forward to recommendation sessions, workshops, and even movie-themed quiz nights.
Although they were not at the event this time, the Adventure Travel Club remains a highly popular student organization. They specialize in budget-friendly trips and organize four major excursions per year to some of Europe’s most unique destinations. Another favorite is Kávészünet (Coffee Break Club), where members explore Budapest’s best cafés together, sparking up conversations and socializing over great coffee. For entrepreneurial-minded students, Alliance serves as a hub for aspiring business leaders. Through workshops, networking events, and business development programs, members gain insights into starting and managing a business. If you're interested in investments and enjoy applying your knowledge in competitions, or if professional growth is a priority in your free time, the Szigma group is the perfect match. Here, you’ll find like-minded peers passionate about finance and strategic decision-making. Finally, while they are not currently recruiting new members, the Tehátrum Színjátszótér (Tehátrum Theater Group) is still worth mentioning. Their performances are truly engaging and anyone interested can follow their Instagram page for updates on upcoming shows.
Spending hours studying and absorbing knowledge is valuable, but without relaxation and downtime, it's not sustainable. Take advantage of the opportunities offered by these studen organisations, meet new people, and build friendships with those who share your interests!
