Hungary: A Hidden Gem in Global Tourism?
Interview with Gabriele Tragschitz-Köck, lecturer of global tourism.

Why is international tourism such an important sector today?

International tourism is crucial not only for its economic impact but also for cultural exchange and global connectivity. The sector contributes significantly to global GDP, supports millions of jobs, and plays a key role in fostering understanding between people from different backgrounds. As travel has become more accessible and technology has advanced, the tourism industry continues to grow and evolve.

What are the key challenges the industry is facing today?

International tourism is currently grappling with several challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic was a huge disruption, but now, the sector is focused on rebuilding and adapting to new travel behaviors. Challenges such as sustainability, overtourism, and digital transformation are growing in importance. Travelers are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of their travel choices, and destinations need to be more responsible in promoting sustainable practices. Additionally, the rapid advancement of technology, including AI, smart tourism, and data analytics, is transforming how travelers plan and experience their trips.

Speaking of sustainability, how can this trend be seen affecting future tourism management? How should tourism destinations, like Hungary, respond?

Sustainability will continue to be a critical factor in tourism management. Destinations like Hungary, which are rich in natural and cultural heritage, have a unique opportunity to develop sustainable tourism practices that highlight their strengths while protecting their resources. Hungary, for example, can promote eco-tourism initiatives, preserve cultural landmarks, and implement green technologies in hospitality. Management skills related to sustainability, resource management, and collaboration with local communities will be essential for future success in this area.

It’s clear that the tourism industry is evolving. What are some of the essential management skills needed to succeed in the global tourism industry, especially as it becomes more competitive and dynamic?

The tourism industry requires a diverse set of management skills. First and foremost, strategic thinking is crucial for analyzing market trends and positioning destinations effectively. Strong marketing and branding skills are also necessary to differentiate destinations, especially in a crowded marketplace. For example, Hungary can leverage its rich history, culture, and gastronomy to create a compelling tourism identity. Additionally, managers must be adaptable, as the industry is constantly changing. Understanding emerging technologies, customer behavior, and data-driven decision-making will be increasingly important. Leaders in the tourism sector must also prioritize customer experience and be able to manage and motivate diverse teams.

When talking about Hungary specifically. How can Hungary’s potential in the global tourism market be seen, and what can tourism managers do to boost Hungary’s position internationally?

Hungary is a fantastic destination with a lot of untapped potential. The country's history, architecture, thermal baths, and gastronomy are all major assets that can be leveraged in global marketing campaigns. Tourism managers should focus on creating more personalized, experiential offerings to attract different types of travelers. Hungary also has a growing appeal for wellness tourism, and this is an area where strategic management can make a significant impact. To boost Hungary’s position, it’s essential to promote these unique selling points and ensure that the destination is well-represented across digital channels and through global tourism partnerships.

Looking ahead, how will the tourism industry evolve in the next decade, and what impact will this have on travelers?

The next decade will bring major shifts in the tourism industry. With increasing digitalization, we’ll see more personalized experiences powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning. Virtual and augmented reality will likely play a larger role in pre-trip planning and destination exploration. Additionally, travelers will expect more seamless, contactless travel experiences, from booking to check-in and beyond. Destinations will need to adapt by adopting innovative technologies and offering new types of travel experiences that cater to these evolving expectations. Sustainability will also be at the forefront, with travelers becoming more conscious of their environmental impact and choosing destinations that align with their values.

How will all these changes impact the way tourism is managed in the future?

When entering the field of tourism, management needs to be proactive in developing a wide range of skills, from strategic planning and marketing to technology and sustainability. The future of tourism management will be defined by data-driven decision-making, the ability to navigate global markets, and an understanding of the increasingly complex customer needs. In our course, we emphasize the importance of adaptability, creativity, and cross-cultural communication. Management principles need to be applied in order to react to real-world challenges, such as promoting destinations like Hungary in a competitive global tourism market.

Anything else before the course?
