Erasmus and Guest Students Join GTK for the Spring Semester
Every semester sees the arrival of dozens of international students from all corners of the world who would like to gain some experience at the Faculty of Economics. While most of the students come from the Faculty’s 75+ EU Erasmus+ partner universities in over 30 countries, an ever- growing number of students come from ELTE’s non-Eu partners, mostly from South Korea and Japan. GTK also welcomes a small number of international students nominated to other ELTE faculties who wish to study some courses here. We are also happy to see that more than ten students who arrived for the autumn semester decided to stay on for an extra semester because they liked their time here so much.
Following the enrolment session, new students were given a “crash course” into our Faculty. Most importantly, they were familiarised with our teaching and assessment systems, as well as the various platforms (e.g. Neptun, Moodle, etc.) used, in presentations given by the Vice-Dean for International Affairs, Professor Gábor Zemplén. They were also informed about the various documentation requirements related to their stay and studies including Erasmus documents, obtaining a residence permit or a registration card (depending on their nationality), and even a very useful “student certificate” (student card) to get concessions on public transportation, at cinemas, etc.
The Faculty’s student organisations – the Student Union, the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and the International Student Advisory Committee (ISAC) - introduced themselves to the students and called their attention to the opportunity of not only receiving help from them but also the prospect of joining the various clubs the Faculty has on offer, as well as the many events they organise for students during the semester from city walks to ice-skating and visits to Budapest’s famous baths. The first such event was the campus tour during which the new students were shown all the important facilities and venues like the Video Library, the Exam Centre, and the various modern classrooms with 21st century equipment.
Undoubtedly the most enjoyable part of the enrolment week took place on the first day when students played some fun ice-breaking games to get to know one another. After a game of bingo two Hungarian tongue-twisters were introduced to the students, which were later followed by others in in French, German, Dutch, Chinese, and Korean, and Classroom Q409 echoed with laughter as the newcomers were challenged to try to say these difficult sentences fast and several times in row. For the benefit of those who arrive late and also to allow new students to return to the presentations to digest the information better, the presentations are recorded, and the slides and the videos are uploaded on the Moodle page dedicated to international students.
