Exploring corporate behavior in emerging economies in light of the EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence (CS3D)
In the context of the approval of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive by the Council of the European Union on March 15, 2024, this presentation delves into corporate behavior in emerging economies, drawing insights from two interconnected studies. The first study examines the impact of sourcing from informal economies on export likelihood and performance for local firms. Through empirical analysis in Mexican manufacturing plants, it reveals how leveraging the informal economy can enhance competitiveness and export outcomes. The second study explores human rights violations in workplaces, comparing multinational enterprises (MNEs) and local firms in Mexico. Findings suggest that while MNEs exhibit lower likelihoods of violating employee rights, the density of MNEs in a region has a negative influence on local firms’ respect for employee human rights. These insights contribute to the ongoing discourse on corporate sustainability. By integrating human rights and environmental considerations into corporate operations, the EU-adopted directive aims to foster responsible corporate behavior worldwide. Our exploration sheds light on corporate conduct in emerging economies, offering implications for global sustainability efforts.
